- 1. What is interlibrary loan?
The interlibrary loan program (ILL) allows eligible patrons to borrow materials from libraries around the world. The prompt return of books ensures that we remain in good standing with our fellow libraries.
- 2. Who may request an ILL?
ILL services are available to JMLS students, faculty and staff.
Requests for Law Review, JCIL, and RIPL, must be submitted via the journal's respective ILL requestor. Please consult your journal editor to determine this contact.- 3. What if I have questions about ILL as a journal editor?
If you have questions as a journal editor, contact Jamie Sommer by e-mail or at 312.427.2737 x.308.
- 4. What types of materials are loaned?
JMLS patrons may request books deemed “circulating“, by the respective lending library, as well as photocopies of journal and newspaper articles. Reference/reserve books, rare books, loose-leaf volumes, multi-volume sets, textbooks, study guides, CD-ROMs, and DVDs are typically non-circulating items.
- 5. How long will it take?
The average turnaround time for a given request is two weeks; however, because we are at the mercy of the lending library, please be sure to request items well in advance of deadlines.
- 6. How will I know when the item has arrived?
You will receive an email when your ILL has arrived indicating that your item is available for pick-up at the JMLS library circulation desk. Photocopies of articles are yours to keep. Some articles will be emailed to you directly.
- 7. How long may I keep an item? May I renew?
Due dates will be clearly indicated on each ILL item. Renewals are determined by the respective lending library. Be sure to request renewals well in advance of the due date. Any late fees or replacement charges are the responsibility of the individual borrower.
- 8. Can I submit an ILL request electronically?
Eligible patrons may request an item directly from WorldCat . Upon locating the appropriate record, simply click the 'Borrow this item from another library' link and complete all relevant fields.
- 9. What if I want to go over to another library to borrow the item in person?
Material available at CLAS libraries (Chicago-Kent, DePaul, Loyola, Northwestern and University of Chicago Law Library), may be viewed by eligible patrons on the library’s premises. If a patron wants to borrow a given item, he or she must borrow it via the ILL process outlined above.
