Use policies
The use of the Law Library is a privilege extended to those who comply with the rules and procedures governing its use. Library privileges may be withheld from anyone breaking these rules or exhibiting disrespect for the Library or its patrons. Serious violations of the library rules will be reported to the appropriate disciplinary body.
- Law Library users appreciate that the library serves as a quiet place to study. Please respect those around you by keeping noise to a minimum. This includes, but is not limited to, talking and audible use of technological devices (computers, cell phones, headphones, etc.). Group study rooms are available in the library for those who would like to quietly study or work collaboratively.
- The 6th floor is designated as a group study area where quiet talking is allowed. The 8th floor is a no talking zone reserved for quiet, individual study. Floors 9 and 10 are research floors, where talking is not encouraged. Please keep these zones in mind.
- Talking on mobile phones is not permitted in the Library. Please leave the Library or go to a stairwell to talk on your phone.
- The Library allows covered drink containers, including plastic bottles and disposable coffee cups. If you bring food into the Library, please be respectful of fellow patrons and do not bring in food that is noisy, odiferous, or messy.
- You must present a current, validated identification card in order to enter and use the Library, except the Federal Government Documents Depository Collection. If you wish to use the Depository Collection, ask to see the Reference Librarian.
- Failure to return materials when they are due may subject you to a fine or replacement fee.
- Academic computer databases provided to JMLS by LEXIS-NEXIS and Westlaw are only available to John Marshall students, faculty and staff. Alumni and CBA members have limited access to Westlaw and Lexis at special workstations on the 6th floor.
- Library staff will not attempt to locate patrons in the Library.
- If you have violated Library use policies, you may be asked by a Library employee to show your ID card. Refusal to do so is a violation of Library use policies.
